Is a phrase I didn’t actually know the meaning of until just now, however the real meaning is unimportant and unrelated to this post because I was just looking for a phrase that had carp in it somewhere…
OK, so its another bad pun, but hey! My latest project has been making a needle felted koi carp, and I felt that this blog hadn’t had nearly enough puns in it lately, so, with a koi smile I decided to put some in this post… (now I feel slightly embarrassed. That was a really carp joke…)
This little fish was actually inspired by yesterdays wanderings around Cardiff, where I ambled to Roath Park, and had a look inside the little Victorian hothouse, which was full of tropical plants and had a big pond teeming with koi carp.
I watched them for a while, and realised that they would look lovely in felt. So I started on a felt carp them moment I got home!
Here’s a picture of it in progress. I strated with a based of white wool, and then added the colour and detail on top.
and a couple more of the finished fish!
I’d like to make a koi carp mobile, though I still haven’t finished the last fish mobile I started!

So here’s something I made a while before Christmas.
I have always loved dinosaurs and I’ve seen Jurassic Park so many times that I quote it by accident almost every day, so what better thing to make than a woolly T-Rex. I even managed to make him stand on his hind legs!
He’s a fearsome woolly beast!

As well as needle felting, I am also starting out a career in theatre design. In the last few months I did three Theatre Design jobs in a row, which was brilliant, but also meant that I had no spare time at all so my felting has suffered somewhat. I hadn’t made anything for months, and this was sad as I really wanted to felt and I have so many projects that I want to do, and so many animals still to make!
Over Christmas I got given a lovely present of some alpaca wool, so decided the best thing to make was an alpaca alpaca! I have never worked with alpaca before, and it seems to make a firmer felt than merino, which is a bit squishy.
I have spent a lot of time trying to think of alpaca puns, but they are all so terrible that I feel a bit embarrassed even writing them down, which I suppose most people would consider a good thing…
I have a couple more things I need to photograph and put up here too, which I will get round to eventually.
